First off, kudos on actually getting a correct fact on one of these. It frustrates me when people try to raise awareness for something and call assumptions “facts” without actually checking. This statement about mortality rates is 100% true. So don’t just go thinking, “Oh yeah, you say that just to get attention.” Google it. Eating disorders KILL. They are not cool. They are not something that you decide to get into because you want a quick diet. They are the deadly demise of so many men and women of all ages, and they are nothing to be mocked or belittled. If you are concerned you or a loved one may have an eating disorder, please speak to someone. There is help. It is NEVER too late to recover. Here’s the info for the national Eating Disorder Association help line:

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, we are here to help. Call our toll free, confidential Helpline Monday-Friday, 9:00 am- 5:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time: 1-800-931-2237 or click here.  Our helpline volunteers will be there to offer support and guidance with compassion and understanding.

It’s true that some people adopt crash diets and mimic disordered behavior without actually being disordered, and that many of them “get over it” in a way — but here’s the thing, you’ll never know for sure which person is just going through a “phase” and which person has a serious problem (or will grow to develop a serious problem). So if you see the warning signs of an eating disorder in yourself, a friend, or family member — get help! It’s far better to approach the situation with more gravity than less. You never know — you could save a life!
